“My child’s pain is real, but no one can explain it.”

Many families feel stuck and unsure how to help.

My Pain Toolbox is a 6-week online group course for tamariki aged 8–14 and their whānau. It helps families understand persistent pain, learn strategies to calm the body and brain, and rebuild confidence through movement, sleep, and connection.

Who Is It For?

This program is ideal for children aged 8–14 who:
✔ Experience ongoing or recurring pain
✔ Are not undergoing major new medical investigations
✔ Are supported by a parent or caregiver to attend each week
✔ Want to learn about pain in a way that makes sense to them

No referral required..

Program Overview

6 weekly sessions (1 hour each)

  1. Delivered via Microsoft Teams or in-person at our clinic in Tauranga

  2. Includes short presentation + group discussion

  3. Breakout rooms led by paediatric pain clinicians

  4. Maximum 10 families per group

  5. Workbook used together with child + caregiver(s)

  • Pain is a protective system. We explore how pain can stick around even when the body has healed and how children’s pain stories matter.

  • We explain how the brain, stress, and emotion turn up the “danger dial.” Children learn calming techniques and explore how thoughts and feelings affect their pain.

  • Children often fear movement. This session introduces gentle pacing, energy planning, and building back confidence with movement.

  • Poor sleep and pain go hand-in-hand. We explore how to create calming bedtime routines and how rest supports healing and learning.

  • Pain affects how children feel about themselves, friendships, and school. We focus on emotional safety, being understood, and communicating with others.

  • This final session helps children reflect, build a flare-up plan, set goals, and celebrate progress.
