Toileting Support for Children
Toileting is a major developmental milestone—and like all milestones, every child gets there in their own time. But when toileting becomes a source of stress or confusion, we're here to help. Our paediatric occupational therapists provide gentle, evidence-based support to help your child develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
Why Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapists look at the whole child—their physical skills, sensory processing, routines, environment, and emotional wellbeing. We don’t just focus on the toilet routine—we explore all the factors that might be influencing your child’s experience.
Support may include:
Understanding your child’s unique sensory profile
Creating a calm and predictable toilet routine
Strengthening core and postural control for sitting stability
Supporting interoception (the ability to recognize body signals)
Promoting independence with wiping, hand washing and dressing
Empowering you as a parent with practical tools and strategies
Who we work with
We welcome referrals for children from toddler age through to late primary school. Whether your child has an underlying diagnosis or not, we’re here to support you.
Common referrals include:
Autism Spectrum Disorder
ADHD
Global Developmental Delay
Sensory Processing Differences
Anxiety
Children with no formal diagnosis, just needing a little extra help
Parent support matters
Toileting can be a sensitive subject and it often comes with big emotions—for children and parents alike. Our therapists approach every child and family with compassion, patience and understanding. We're not here to judge, we're here to partner with you.

How we help
Our toileting support is designed for children who may be:
Showing signs of toileting delays
Withholding stool or experiencing constipation
Having frequent accidents
Struggling with sensory challenges in the bathroom environment
Transitioning out of nappies later than expected
Diagnosed with developmental, neurological or behavioural conditions affecting toileting
We also support children who have previously been toilet trained but have regressed due to stress, illness, or change in routine.
What to expect
We begin with a comprehensive assessment, often including a parent interview and observation of your child’s functional skills. From there, we create a personalised plan with goals that suit your family and your child’s pace.
Support may be delivered through:
1:1 therapy sessions
Collaborative plans with your early childhood centre or school
Visual routines and social stories
Home strategies and tailored resources
